Sculptures: Engineering Content and Process
|
In the first stage of the project, students interviewed their subjects and formed initial ideas for stories. Since students did not yet have stories to put visuals and sounds to, we used this time to explore some of the basic features of the software, VSXu Artiste and PureData. As a class we worked through a series of tutorials that students could later use as building blocks for their own products. In parallel, students went through a series of experiences to introduce them to the concept of storytelling through music and dance.

Once the groups each had a rough draft of a story developed, they were able to design soundscapes and visuals to communicate the emotions and to better support their story. In class we participated in activities that helped us identify the types of sounds, colors, shapes, and images that would solicit a specific physical and emotional response from the audience. From these activities, we used the tutorials as stepping stones to create first drafts of our soundscapes and visuals in the software.

The final stage of the project involved a series of critiques and reflections where students practiced and refined their work. Students tracked their products using progress charts hanging in the classroom and weekly critiques supported them in providing thoughtful and helpful feedback
